Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg Makes 9 Empowerment Grants to Pinellas County Nonprofits
The Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg awarded 9 grants totaling more than $771,515 to nonprofits working to advance health equity for residents of Pinellas County.
The Foundation works with people across the nonprofit, public, faith and business communities to achieve more equitable health outcomes in Pinellas County. By paying attention to the root causes of inequality in our community, the Foundation targets its grantmaking, convening, policy and communications work where they can have the greatest impact.
The Foundation’s Empowerment Grants will help smaller- to mid-sized nonprofit organizations undertake new initiatives and collaborations, expand or sustain current activities, or improve organizational capacity to impact community health in substantial ways. The grant round came at the request of the nonprofit community for additional support for organizations under $1 million in annual organizational expenses.
The recipients of the 2017 Empowerment Grants are:
Community Law Program, Inc., $79,703.00 to establish a collaborative of legal aid providers to work towards changes in the administration of eviction notices and provide legal assistance to women in South Pinellas County.
Community Tampa Bay, Inc., $56,392.00 to train and encourage youth advocacy for education policy change by promoting reform locally and at the state level, as well as document youth involvement through a multimedia campaign. The project aligns with three key intervention strategies cited by the Centers for Disease Control to impact community health through improved education outcomes.
Edible Peace Patch Project, $94,493.00 for a collaboration between the Florida Housing Authority, Jordan Park Apartments, Family Nutrition Program, Cooking Matters and other community partners to create a community teaching garden in Jordan Park where residents of all ages will enjoy the benefits of gardening, healthy fresh foods, and nutrition education.
Florida Consumer Action Network Foundation, Inc., $99,735.00 to support Florida Consumer Action Network (FCAN) housing and transit advocacy efforts by increasing donor support and public awareness. The project will create new print and digital tools to better educate the public about the organization’s mission.
Florida Dream Center, Inc., $73,414.00 to procure two new passenger vehicles to transport children, families, and homeless individuals in the Lealman community. This capital purchase supplements existing program activities and services.
Florida Voices for Health, $100,000 to support the FightLikeHealth St. Pete project, a grassroots approach to overcoming chronic obstacles to healthcare access among communities of color. This program will survey the south St. Petersburg community to understand barriers to health care, provide information resources and explore solutions.
In Touch with Communities Around the World, Inc. (DBA Arts Conservancy for Teens), $60,000 for an after-school mentoring and family support program for low-income males ages 12 to 18. The program focuses on six areas of youth development: education, leadership, healthy lifestyles, workforce readiness, money management and cultural development.
Physicians for Social Responsibility, $95,219.00 will support the Climate and Health Call to Action, a project to engage health professionals on the topic of climate change and its impact on communities. It will provide tools for health care professional to create environmentally sustainable offices and educate patients.
Pinellas County Sheriff’s Police Athletic League, $89,682.00 to hire a Community Engagement and Impact Specialist to connect Pinellas PAL families in the Lealman area to a wide range of civic, health, economic, and medical resources.
