Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg Grants $405,794 to Support Capacity-Building Projects at 29 Nonprofits
Funded Projects and Initiatives Will Improve Nonprofit Sector Ability to Enhance Population Health and Health Equity in South Pinellas County.
Twenty-nine nonprofit organizations have received grants ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 to support one-time projects that will enhance their ability to improve organizational capacity and advance community health and health equity in South Pinellas County.
The Capacity Building Mini Grant opportunity is the first of three grant rounds sponsored by the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg (Foundation) in 2017. The Foundation was inspired by feedback from the local nonprofit community stating that many organizations would benefit from resources to pursue small, targeted projects designed to increase their organizational and/or programmatic capacity. However, funding of this type is rarely available and is often too inflexible to meet real needs.
“The Foundation believes that our nonprofit partners have the wisdom to know what they need to move their organizations forward and serve the community,” said Randall H. Russell, President and CEO of the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg. “We are pleased to provide this flexible funding for one-time projects that each organization has prioritized as small but important investments in their organizations, programs, and people.”

Additional Grant Rounds to Be Awarded In 2017
The two additional 2017 grant rounds are:
Transformative Grants — These are multi-year or single-year grants of between $50,000 to $500,000 per year to support ambitious programs or advocacy initiatives that will improve population health outcomes through larger-scale efforts that involve significant cross-sector collaboration targeting transformative systems change. The Call for Transformative Ideas for this grant round opened on May 1, 2017 and closed May 26, 2017 at noon. Grant awards will be announced by November 1, 2017. Empowerment Grants — These grants of between $50,000 and $100,000 are targeted to organizations with annual operating budgets of less than $1 million to support new initiatives, new collaborations, expanding or sustaining a current activity, or improving organizational capacity in such a way as to improve community health in substantial ways. This is another programmatic response to community feedback received by the Foundation following its first round of grantmaking in 2016. The RFP will be released on July 7, 2017.
